About Jasmin.

Portrait of Jasmin Nunes, a young inspirational film maker

Jasmin Nunes is a writer, director, and producer born and raised in Manhattan. Of Jamaican, Italian, and Irish descent, she brings a rich cultural perspective to her storytelling, one deeply rooted in questions of identity, belonging, and representation. Her debut short film, Ackee and Saltfish, draws inspiration from her late grandmother’s journey emigrating from Jamaica in the 1940s, reflecting on the quiet struggles and cultural tensions faced by immigrant families across generations.

Originally on track to pursue a career in neuroscience, Jasmin made a transcendent step to follow her true calling of a filmmaker: unbinding an innate creativity that she has nurtured since her childhood.

Her ethos as a storyteller is marked with a commitment to visualizing unseen truths and giving voice to experiences too often left in the margins. With her debut short film, Ackee and Saltfish, she not only honors her heritage but sheds light on the universal complexities of cultural assimilation and preservation.

Jasmin is resolute in reshaping the landscape of representation in film. She recognizes the inequities of Black representation and the narrow spectrum of stories historically told, and she is determined to expand that narrative. Her work aims to normalize diverse casts and perspectives on screen, contributing to a new cinematic era where underrepresented stories are given equal visibility and impact spanning all genres.

As she continues to develop projects, Jasmin remains dedicated to telling intimate, character-driven stories that resonate on both personal and cultural levels. By drawing on her own heritage and life experiences, she seeks to create films that are both emotionally grounded and socially meaningful, ensuring that more voices and identities are represented in cinema’s evolving landscape.
